The Luminaries, a support organization for Torrance Memorial Medical Center, introduced the Links of Love initiative during Holiday Festival 2017. The group invited festival attendees to make a contribution personalized with a handwritten message. Messages were then delivered to hospital patients and also included in a paper link chain that decorated various units to spread holiday cheer.

What is the Alzheimer’s epidemic?

It’s hard to believe, but every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. More than 5 million Americans are presently living with the disease, and that number is expected to climb to 16 million by 2050 with our aging population.

Judy Maizlish recalls that her parents always prioritized community involvement and giving to others, even when funds were limited. "Giving is in my blood," she says. Though she's past retirement age, Maizlish remains willing to give her time to a job she loves. She serves as executive director at Independence Center, a small, nonprofit residential program in Los Angeles for people with social and learning disabilities.
